The book treats different aspects of environmental analysis such as sample handling and analytical techniques, the applications to trace analysis of pollutants (mainly organic compounds), and quality assurance aspects, including the use of certified reference materials for the quality control of the whole analytical process. Population Control $14.42 Perhaps titled with a knowing wink to its rather cluttered guest list, Boston hip-hop DJ Statik Selektah’s fourth studio album, Population Control, features over 40 different singers, MCs, and DJs from the East Coast hip-hop scene, ranging from the established (Talib Kweli, Styles P, M.O.P.’s Lil’ Fame), to those barely out of short trousers (15-year-old Game Boi). It’s a testament to his production skills that despite the extensive array of collaborators, the follow-up to 2010′s 100 Proof: The Hangover is a surprisingly cohesive affair which cleverly avoids drifting into random mixtape territory. Indeed, the slightly menacing, radio-tuning, opening title track provides something of a red herring, as other than the aggressive hip-hop break down that interrupts “You’re Gone,” and the chaotic homage to DJ culture on closer “A DJ Saved My Life,” this is a predominantly chilled-out affair dominated by ’70s soul strings, breezy jazz horns, chopped-up melodic samples, and laid-back rhythms. While the sheer amount of material to wade through means it sometimes feels like a bit of a slog, there is enough invention on display to justify the marathon running time. With its smoky muted trumpets, plinky piano chords, and soulful chorus, “New York, New York” could possible challenge Jay-Z & Alicia Keys’ duet as the premier urban ode to the Big Apple; “Smoke On” merges a seductive bassline which could have been lifted from a Barry White record with languid beats and warm analog synths, while Nitty Scott MC and Rapsody more than compete with their male counterparts with the twinkling xylophones, scratched vinyl effects, and clattering percussion of the dreamy “Black Swan.” Elsewhere there are nods to ’80s synth pop (“Half Moon Part”), jazz-blues (Harlem Blues), reggae (“They Don’t Know”), and falsetto-led R&B (“Play the Game”), while the highlight appears courtesy of “Down,” a vintage slice of East Coast rap underpinned by a timeless gospel vocal sample and a simple, head-nodding military drum roll. Bach: Trio Sonatas $18.98 Lorenzo Ghielmi comes from the scholarly world of organ music and construction, but general listeners shouldn’t let that stop them here: this is an attractive reading of Bach’s six trio sonatas for organ, written as an exercise for his son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. As always when he appropriated Italian forms, Bach did so in a kind of exhaustive way, exploring numerous combinations of form, texture, and melody. However, this bright works are among the Leipzig master’s sunniest and most accessible; the Vivaldi influence is especially strong here. Ghielmi’s notes (in English, German, Italian, and French) quote an anonymous 1788 writer, perhaps Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, as saying that the works were “written in such a galant manner that they are still very playable today.” The challenge for the organist, in addition to mastering the variety of technical problems on hand (and foot), is to deploy the registrations in such a way as to bring out the structures of the music rather than compete with them. Here Ghielmi excels, aided by the capabilities of the marvelous small organ of the Basilica di San Simpliciano in Milan. The slow movements offer related but diverse sonorities that always seem to be revealing something new, and you can sample the third and fourth sonatas in the set, which open with a pair of slow movements, for an idea of the control Ghielmi exerts over the entire set. Goin’ Down [Cherry Red] $18.98 Although they are known to modern listeners as the band behind the new wave gem “She’s a Beauty,” the Tubes had an entirely different career during their mid- to late-’70s tenure on the A&M label. Working with gifted producers like Al Kooper and Todd Rundgren, the group created a body of work that fused prog rock instrumental virtuosity, the sarcasm of new wave, and Frank Zappa-styled musical satire into a style all its own. Listeners get a great chance to sample the Tubes’ ambitious style on Goin’ Down, a generous two-CD compilation that includes all of their radio favorites, album tracks from each of their A&M releases (including the Remote Control album in its entirety), and most of the rarities that had previously appeared on T.R.A.S.H. (Tubes Rarities and Smash Hits). The end result is one-stop shopping for any listener who wants to get all the highlights of their 1970s work without having to hunt down the group’s often inconsistent albums. Songs like “What Do You Want from Life” and “Don’t Touch Me There” sound as eccentrically witty as ever, but the real surprises are the album tracks: “My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains” is a surprisingly subtle ballad full of hypnotic synthesizer textures, and “This Town” skewers big city life over a tune that re-creates the vintage Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin lounge pop sound with surprising faithfulness. The package is rounded out by brief but informative liner notes and a selection of provocative pictures from the group’s notorious 1970s stage shows. All in all, Goin’ Down may be a little too much Tubes for the casual listener, but it remains the definitive portrait of the group’s 1970s era for serious fans.
