Migraines
I began suffering from migraine headaches
at the age of four. I visited many medical doctors, neurologists,
and allergists, all of which could not offer any explanation
of why I was suffering from migraines or what I could do
to change my condition. I only received medications to
give me temporary relief from my symptoms. I was given
Propranolol as a preventative medication, which I took
every day three times a day. When I had a migraine, I had
three different medications to choose from – Codeine, Fioricet, or Imitrex injections. All
three would give me temporary relief of symptoms but had
unpleasant side effects. Occasionally I wouldn’t get
any relief and would have to go to the hospital for a shot
of Demerol to relieve the pain. My junior year of high school
I was so “drugged” I couldn’t stay awake
past 11:00 a.m. and consequently attended school for only
half days.
By the time I finished college and entered the world of
teaching, I was waking up with a headache every day, suffering
from at least three to four migraines a week and was taking
six Codeine just to get through the day. It was around this
time that a friend of mine referred me to a local chiropractor.
The chiropractor conducted an exam, and based on the results
was able to explain to me what was causing my migraines.
He is able to provide relief with simple adjustments to my
ribs and shoulders, and other therapies. Additionally, the
doctor has also taught me simple exercises I can do at home
to maintain the adjustments that I receive in the office.
Since I began treatment, I have gone from three to four migraines
a week to one a month. I also no longer take medication for
my headaches.
The doctor has educated me about the nervous system; why
I suffer from migraines; and what I can do to help change
my condition. He has also improved my overall health.
